Invitation to Attend the ECCC Pre-Trail Chamber Session 30 June 2008

The Pre-Trial Chamber of the ECCC has scheduled a Public Hearing of the Appeal by Ieng Sary against the Order of Provisional Detention to open on 30 June 2008. The Chamber has decided to permit a live feed of the proceedings to be given to radio and television stations for public broadcast. ECCC : Press Statement

A delegation from the ECCC, led by the Director of Administration, H.E. Sean Visoth and Deputy Director of Administration., Mr Knut Rosandhaug, participated in meetings of the Group of Interested States held in New York on 16 and 20 June 2008.

Productive discussions were held in a most constructive atmosphere as donors, the ECCC delegation and senior officials from the United Nations Secretariat discussed the new revised budget, which is presented in two parts: Part I to the end of 2009; and Part II including indicative projections for possible requirements through 2010. The budget reflects a number of changes and clarifications made in response to concerns expressed by the donors following the presentation of the draft in January 2008. Read the rest of this entry »

Khmer Rouge Tribunal asks for US$ 50 million for 2008-2009

Invitation to a press conference on results of donors meetings on ECCC budget

The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) is pleased to invite members of the media to a press conference on the results of the meetings with donors held in New York and on the current status of the ECCC budget.

The press conference will be held: at 1400 on Tuesday 24 June 2008 at the ECCC Information Centre 6A, St 21, Sangkat Tonle Bassac, Khan Chamkar Mon, Phnom Penh (near Psar Kap Ko).

Presentations will be made by H.E. Sean Visoth, the Director of Administration and Mr Knut Rosandhaug, Deputy Director of Administration, on their return from New York where they participated in meetings of the Group of Interested States on 16 and 20 June 2008.

An overview of the budget will be introduced during the press conference and a summary of the current budgetary situation, including recent contributions.

Japanese Assistance for the Project to Enhance, Jucidial Process
Of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC)

In response to the request from the Royal Government of Cambodia. the Government of Japan has decided to contribute USS 2,952,653 (two million nine hundred fifty-two thousand six hundred and fifty-three US dollars) of the counterpart fund of the Japanese Non-Project Grant Aid NPGA 2006 (Japan X) for the purpose of implementing the “Project to Enhance Judicial Process of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia”. This project is aimed at enhancing the work of the Office of Administration, which provides necessary administrative sen’iees to facilitate the judiciary offices and the Chambers. Khieu Samphan Not Yet Discharged

Phnom Penh: Former Democratic Kampuchea State Presidium Chairman Khieu Samphan, ill with hypertension, has not been discharged from well-known state-run Calmette Hospital yet up to May 28, while the other four ailing Khmer Rouge leaders have not been reported in serious conditions that need hospitalization. Forum tackles students’ ignorance about Khmer Rouge

Ignorance of the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge (KR) and of the ongoing Khmer Rouge Tribunal (KRT) is a serious problem among the youth of Cambodia. It has often been reported that young Cambodians deny the atrocities could have happened in their country, despite their parents having undergone extreme suffering and loss during the KR era. Last Sunday, in an effort to address this knowledge gap in Cambodia’s youth, the Youth Resource Development Program (YRDP) and Church World Services ran a forum in Phnom Penh on the KR regime and KRT, attended by two hundred tertiary students form various Phnom Penh universities. Khieu Samphan’s first Trial Hearing at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal

On April 23, Former Khmer Rouge Leader Khieu Samphan appeared at Khmer Rouge Tribunal (KRT) for his “Appeal Brief against the provisional Detention Order of November 2007”, though no date for bale was mentioned by the court. Khieu Samphan, 76, former Khmer Rouge head of state, was detained by KRT in November. He is charged with crime against humanity and grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions of August 12, 1949. He is represented by Co-lawyers Say Bory and Jacques Verges, a French national known for his defense of notorious figures including Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie and Venezuelan terrorist “Carlos the Jackal”. Khieu Sampham, alias Hem, was born on July 27, 1931, in Rom Chek commune, Rom Duol district, Svay Rieng province. France pledges KRT funds
