Departure of Cambodian JENESYS Delegation

A Cambodian delegation of 20 people, consisting of 16 young artists, 2 government officials and 2 professors, will depart Cambodia on January 14, 2009 for a stay of approximately 8 days in Japan. CNN Hero of the Year nominee Phymean Noun shares her philosophy

DURING a visit to the Stung Meanchey Center, a school bordering Phnom Penh’s municipal garbage dump, one young student ran spontaneously towards Phymean Noun, the school’s founder, and lept into her embrace, kissing her on the cheek.

When the other students at the middle school saw this, they surrounded Phymean Noun and within moments, dozens of students were laughing and smiling as they sought her embrace. Introduction: Gender and Education in Cambodia

Although Cambodia has made good progress in education, gender inequality still remains a major challenge in this sector. Boys and girls start schooling on equal footing in primary education but dropout rate among girl students starts to go up with their grade improvement, particularly after completion of secondary level.
