France pledges KRT funds

France has vowed to grant over US$ 1 million to the Khemr Rouge Tribunal (KRT). On Friday, Rama Yade, France secretary of state for foreigner affairs, told reporters in Phnom Penh that France would continue to support the KRT.
“For 2008, France will grand Extraordinary Chamber more than US$1 million, of which US$ 750,000 will go to the United Nation and US$ 250,000 will go to the Cambodian side,” she said.
The French government’s grant comes as the KRT is the facing a serious financial crisis and has appealed for US$114 million from the international community to be able to proceed until 2011.
“France always regards international justice as a main issue and human rights mustn’t be just a word,” Yade said.
Yade said she met government officials, political parties and civil society staff working on human rights during her three-day visit. She said that she neither supported nor opposed human rights reports from the UN, civil societies or the government. “It’s essential that we listen to all sides,” she claimed. ……
