Brother Number 2, Nuon Chea, Arrested For Trial

Pailin, Banteay Meanchey: Nuon Chea, brother number 2 of the Khmer Rouge, was arrested and flown in a helicopter to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). The latest news was reported that the court had charged Nuon Chea with crimes against humanity and war crimes and placed him in provisional detention on the same evening. Concerns Still Voiced Over Appointment of You Bunleng

Both the United Nations and civil society organizations are still expressing their concerns over the appointment of Co-Investigating Judge You Bunleng to head the Appeals Court as up to the present time Cambodian side still hasn’t explained clearly about the issue. Sihanouk waits in vain fro televised discussion

Despite clear indications that his invitation had been declined, former King Sihanouk nonetheless waited for United Nations (UN) staff of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) at the Royal Palace on September 7. The staff had been invited to a televised discussion to clarify the nature of Sihanouk’s links to the Khmer Rouge regime, a discussion seemingly scuppered by the ECCC officials’ absence, newspapers reported September 10. Prince Sihanouk was warmly welcomed whereas Khieu Samphan was protested against, when they returned to Phnom Penh.

After the establishment of the Supreme National Council (SNC) and meeting of its 12 members in Paris, France, the United Nations Advance Mission in Cambodia (MIPRENUC) started to work in Cambodia. Leaders of the Cambodian parties and members and officials of the SNC started to return to Cambodia.  Cambodian people are most delighted with the peace and reconciliation process. Financial Issue Becomes the Last Important Obstacle of KR Tribunal

So far, senior Khmer Rouge (KR) Tribunal’s officials have claimed that the trials of former top KR leaders are going to be held in early 2008. However, some civil society organization officials and observers say the KR trials may not get underway as planned since the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) is facing many obstacles among which financial issue is a crucial one.
