Phnom Penh: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen blamed Lon Nol-led republican, who led 1970 military coup to toppled then-Prince Norodom Sihanouk, for a cause of Cambodia destruction and blame should not be put on Pol Pot-led genocidal regime solely.
Speaking at Preah Monivong Bridge and air bridge worksite inauguration ceremony in Phnom Penh on 27 May, Hun Sen said what makes regret was achievement across the country having been left behind by the previous leaders from one generation from another especially in the generation of Sangkum Reastr Miyum led by then-Head of State Norodom Sihanouk, being destroyed by Lon Nol and Pol Pot regime. “We not only blamed for Pol Pot who destroyed Cambodia but also Lon Nol-led reactionary who led a coup to topple then-Prince Norodom Sihanouk, causing war throughout the country,” Hun Sen said.
Large-scale bombing in Cambodia caused destruction to rural infrastructures, Buddhist monasteries, schools and bridges, Hun Sen added. Roads were cut off and even Chroy Chanva Bridge was also destroyed in the war time in 1970-75. If no cause stemmed from the ‘reactionary’ on 18 March 1970, perhaps, there was no dramatic destruction the people of Cambodian received together with loss of millions of lives in 1970-75 and in 1975-79.
Both Lon Nol and Pol Pot regime’s destroyers should be condemned, Hun Sen said.
