Svay Chrum-Svay Rieng: From 13 to 15 August 2008, Youth For Peace (YFP) organized a training course on “Youth and the Khmer Rouge Trials” in Svay Chrum High School, Svay Chrum district, Svay Rieng province with 30 participants, 12 of whom are female.

“The training course was held to make youth understand the process of the Khmer Rouge trials and its essence and benefits to Cambodia,” said Morn Sokoeun, Phnom Penh’s YFP coordinator, adding that another objective was to enable youth to participate in the process of the Khmer Rouge tribunal. “Youth For Peace wants youth to study and understand the unforgettable bitter Cambodian history which lasted 3 years, 8 months and 20 days from 1975,” he said.
“In this training course, all the participants were from grade 11 and grade 12 from communes in Svay Chrum district and have been rewarded certificate at the end of the course so that they could use it in the future,” he said, strongly hoping that youth will participate in and observe every activity of the up-coming Khmer Rouge trials.

Chem Makara, a participant in the training course, said: “I am very glad to participate in this course and to see that youth are participating in the process of the Khmer Rouge trials. I sincerely hope that in the future there will be no killings of our people and that there will only be prosperity with the participation of youth qualified and knowledgeable.”

“Having undertaken the training course, I have gained a better understanding of the genocidal regime that I only heard from my parents before that. I’ve known how cruel Pol Pot was,” another participating youth Nhem Chenda told our reporter. “Even my family also lost members to the regime. As I’ve understood it clearly from YFP, which has given me spiritual education, peace education, well-self-building, and peace culture, I can make myself calmed, not frightened like before,” she added.
