Phnom Penh: While Nuon Chea’s February 4, 2008 appeal hearing was adjourned, Ieng Sary, who has been detained by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), fell seriously ill and passed urine that contained blood. He was admitted immediately to Calmette Hospital, but up to the afternoon of February 5, 2008, there has been no report on Ieng Sary’s health condition yet.
Reach Sambath, spokesman for the ECCC or the Khmer Rouge tribunal, told Kampuchea Thmey by phone February 5 in the afternoon that former Khmer Rouge leader Ieng Sary was sent to Calmette Hospital at 1.45 p.m. on February 4, 2008 after the appeal hearing by Nuon Chea’s lawyers had been ended. When asked about Ieng Sary’s health condition, Reach Sambath said he had not been informed yet, claiming finally that Ieng Sary’s health was getting better.

Ang Udom, Ieng Sary’s defence lawyer, told Kampuchea Thmey that the reason that Ieng Sary was hospitalized February 4 was that his ailment was aggravated. The illness was related to the urine tube, he said.

“Ieng Sary’s urine tube has tumor and then his illness returned, he passed urine that contained blood,” Ang Udom heard his daughter and doctor said, adding that since he was not a doctor, he could not make further comment.

However, a source from Calmette Hospital disclosed February 5 that Ieng Sary’s condition was getting a bit better, but the time that Ieng Sary will be taken back to the detention facility was not clear yet.

Some sources claimed that though Ieng Sary’s health condition was getting better, the concealment of Ieng Sary’s return to the ECCC could have been related to the real health condition of the former Khmer Rouge leader, and the problem could affect the process of the Khmer Rouge tribunal. Moreover, Ieng Sary is now 82 years old. How many years more can he live?

Doctors at Calmette Hospital could not be contacted for clarification of Ieng Sary’s health condition.

It should be noticed that Ieng Sary, former foreign minister of the Khmer Rouge regime, has so far been taken to the hospital for 3 times including this time. The process of the Khmer Rouge tribunal has concerned the people so much as the former Khmer Rouge leaders being detained are getting very old and have been sent to hospital continuously.
