Ieng Sary Selects Alaskan Lawyer

Posted by khmernews on January 18, 2008

Phnom Penh: Ieng Sary, 82, a former senior Khmer Rouge leader of the Democratic Kampuchea regime, was arrested last month and has sought lawyers to defend him against charges brought by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) in which the trial is expected hearings to happen early next year.

Recently, Ieng Sary has selected a famous lawyer from Alaska, who has also defended cases in the international tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.

According to a source close to the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, Ieng Sary has selected Michael Karnavas to represent him against charges.

Michael Karnavas is a lawyer of the Alaska Bar and president of the Association of Defence Counsel of the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ADC-ICTY).

According to the press release of the ECCC, Karnavas has practiced as a defence lawyer since 1986. He has also taught trial advocacy skills for the past 18 years and lectured widely on international criminal law around the world. In 1995 and 1996 he worked in Cambodia with the Cambodian Defender Project (CDP) and the Cambodian Court Training Project. For the past 7 years he has been defending clients before the Yugoslavia tribunal, firstly as lead counsel for Colonel Vidoje Blagojevic, charged with complicity to commit genocide at Srebrenica and then as lead counsel for Dr Jadranko Prlic, charged with large scale ethnic cleansing in Bosnia Herzegovina.

From 2006 he has been the President of the Association of Defence Counsel of the ICTY, the press release stated.

ECCC Spokesman Reach Sambath could not be reached for comments on December 19, 2007, as his phone was not answered.

It should be noticed that Ieng Sary and his wife Ieng Thirith were arrested and brought to the Khmer Rouge Tribunal on November 12, 2007 from their home in Tonle Bassac commune, Chamkar Morn district, under a careful observation from the international community.

Ieng Sary are being provisionally detained under crimes against humanity and war crimes charges.

Immediately after his arrest, 82-year-old Ieng Sary selected Ang Udom to be his lawyer, and now he has selected another Co-Lawyer Michael Karnavas to work with [Ang Udom].

Ang Udom is a famous lawyer and he also creates a lawyer office by himself. He also worked as head of Legal Unit of the Center for Social Development (CSD).

Although Ieng Sary has been trying to seek lawyers to defend him, it is expected that he would not be able to dodge charges since almost half of Cambodians condemn Ieng Sary as a destructive leader who led the country into the mass killings of almost 2 million people.

In 1979, Ieng Sary was sentenced already, but he was later on pardoned by the retired king of Cambodia.

Ieng Sary has been accused of persuading expatriate Cambodian students to return to the country where they were finally killed during the Democratic Kampuchea regime.
