Researchers Discover More Documents Related To Khmer Rouge Leaders

Whilst the process of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal is moving gradually forwards, the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) has discovered some documents successively. All of those documents are believed to be used as charges against former Khmer Rouge leaders in the coming trial.
Researchers of the DC-Cam have recently found out more than 500 pages of documents related to 4 former Khmer Rouge leaders including Nuon Chea, who is already in custody, Ieng Sary, Ieng Thirith, and Khieu Samphan, who are believed to be summoned in the near future.

Youk Chhang, director of the DC-Cam, said that the research on the documents had been conducted following the request by the Co-Prosecutors of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal. “This is what has been requested, and after we have conducted the research, we can find [the documents]. The request has been made for documents such as the history of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kampuchea, passport of any [Khmer Rouge leader], and driving license,” he said, adding that they were important for the case. “Some other documents have only been received recently from abroad. They were sent for the court. Those new documents are policy documents.”

Whilst the Co-Prosecutors and Co-Investigating Judges of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal are striving to collect evidence and witnesses for the accusations against former Khmer Rouge leaders, Son Arun, lawyer of Nuon Chea, is also trying to gather documents at the DC-Cam in order to defend his client.

“After finding all the documents, I will find a method to defend him (Nuon Chea),” Son Arun said, “we have burden of proof of the documents at the DC-Cam. We cannot assume that [those documents] are authentic since they can be made up in order to accuse him (Nuon Chea).”

However, former Brother Number Two Nuon Chea, also former president of the National Assembly of the Democratic Kampuchea regime, who has been written in the warrant to possibly face the life imprisonment, is still not known how much his Co-Lawyers could help him.

According to officials at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, Nuon Chea has been questioned for several times, but is usually trying not to answer the questions raised by the judicial officials.

Up to present, amongst five suspects [recommended by the Co-Prosecutors], only Kaing Guek Eav, also known as Duch, and Nuon chea are in provisional detention.

Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said last week that some former Khmer Rouge leaders would be summoned by the court.

It is expected that those documents recently found could serve as additive evidence to bring the remained former Khmer Rouge leaders to justice.

It is not known who will be the next Khmer Rouge leader to be arrested following Duch and Nuon Chea, but it is believed that not only Duch and Nuon Chea will face the trial alone. After all, other former Khmer Rouge leaders who are living outside jail will be arrested soon.
