Nobel Laureate Dr. Joseph E. Stiglitz, internationally renowned economist and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics, will be visiting Cambodia to offer an outlook for the global and regional economies and related emerging opportunities and risks for developing countries like Cambodia.
Dr. Stiglitz will offer his perspectives on the latest developments in the global trade environment, WTO and the fair trade agenda.  Similarly, the global commodity price boom will be examined, with implications for developing countries’ growing reliance on natural resource based growth.  Dr.  Stiglitz will also provide perspectives on the “economics of information”, the basis for his Nobel Prize, again with implications for developing countries like Cambodia.

During his time in Cambodia, Dr. Stiglitz will be meeting with His Excellency Prime Minister Hun Sen, Members of Parliament, key policy makers, development partners, civil society, as well as university students.

Dr. Stiglitz earned his Nobel Prize in Economics for his seminal work on the economic implications of information asymmetries.   He was the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors during the Clinton Administration, and was awarded the prestigious John Bates Clark Award, given biennially by the American Economic Association to the one economist under forty who has made the most significant contribution to the field.  Dr. Stiglitz has taught at numerous world-class universities, including Princeton, Stanford, MIT, and Oxford.  He is currently a Professor at Columbia University and Chair of Columbia’s University’s Committee on Global Thought.   Furthermore, Dr. Stiglitz is Executive Director of the Initiative for Policy Dialogue, a new think tank which analyzes the trade-offs associated with different economic policies and offers valuable alternatives.  Over the past fifteen years Dr. Stiglitz has held advisory consultations with a wide-range of developing country leaders.
