Phnom Penh: Khmer Rouge Tribunal’s officials brought Nuon Chea on September 21 to Calmette Hospital for a medical checkup.
“In fact, Nuon Chea is not sick, but it’s an obligation to send him for a checkup in order to know what illnesses he has in his old age,” said Khmer Rouge Tribunal Spokesman Reach Sambath, adding that the medical examination took 2 to 3 hours at Calmette Hospital where highly skilled doctors checked his internal organs.

“Nuon Chea lived in the forest for so long and has never had his health checked, so we must take him for medical examinations at the hospital although he is not sick at the moment,” said Reach Sambath, adding that it was the obligation of the tribunal to take care of his health in order that he lived long. “We know that Nuon Chea is old. His illness can attack him without pre-warning. As tribunal’s officials, we perform our tasks. We don’t care whether he is guilty or not, as long as he is under the control of the Extraordinary Chambers,” he said. He added that it was an ordinary health checkup.

At Calmette Hospital, before Nuon Chea arrived at the hospital, there were usual security forces presenting everywhere, which caused a quick surprise too. A little later, an ambulance escorted by security police cars entered the hospital. At this point that people realised that those authorities were guarding the security for Nuon Chea. After the check up, Nuon Chea was brought back to the tribunal immediately. Tribunal’s officials said that Nuon Chea’s facial expression was normal. “In the evening and early morning, he watches the cable TV in his cell,” they said.
